Its focus is to bring awareness and implement the inspirational global vision and ideals of Rabindranath Tagore with regard to art, literature, philosophy, education, global socialization, understanding of diversity, and empowerment to a broader international audience.

Dream and Inception

To build a global village at Tagore Center in the heart of a very diverse city like the City of Houston had been a dream come true for the founder Dr. Ruma Acharya.

In 2013 while serving as the President of the Tagore Society of Houston (TSH), Ruma and her husband, Dr, Asoke Deysarkar took the initiative to build Tagore Grove with the help of other team members of TSH at Ray Miller Park, Harris County, Tx.

The vision of Tagore Grove was inspired by an event and an idea in the 2011-2012 timeframe. A huge drought affected Texas and Houston parks and lost many trees and greenery. TSH wished to donate trees to Houston parks impacted, and the dream of Tagore Grove was born – a garden surrounding a life-size statue of Rabindranath Tagore, aligning with Tagore’s vision of the preservation of the environment and extensive writings on man’s relationship with nature.

Tagore’s life-size bronze statue was custom built by the sculptors of Kolkata Art College, West Bengal, India, and was placed at the northeast corner of Ray Miller Park in Houston, Tx upon receiving the approval from the Pct 3 Harris Community Commissioner as a gift in return to her long-time engineering consulting services to build roads and bridges for Harris County, Texas. The statue was placed in the open air surrounded by rose bushes, magnolia, and weeping willow trees and was named Tagore Grove.

Tagore Grove was intended to be a dedication to all the communities in the city, as a symbol of universal peace and love. The grove was open to the public and welcomed all to visit the site and pay tribute to a cultural genius and a global icon, who transcended time

… Waves break helplessly on each side of the boat, I seem to know the face that I have spied. Oh, to what foreign land do you sail? Come to the bank, moor your boat for a while, Go where you want to, Give where you care to, But come to the bank a moment and smiling…
Rabindranath Tagore from the poem Sonar Tari (the Golden Boat)
